Paihia to Mangonui
Finally we
were off on our bikes. We were both keen to get going and blissfully
ignorant of the journey ahead. Seasoned travellers as we now
considered ourselves to be we thought we could handle the rolling
hills with a minimum of effort. How wrong we were. I guess a nine
month break from cycling with heavy bikes and luggage doesn't really
keep you in shape and there was a fine headwind too. Still the roads
were quiet and the scenery pretty. We spotted our first flightless
birds for which NZ is so famous and unfortunately a very colourful
parrot dead on the road. We were fairly shattered when we rolled into
picture postcard scenic Mangonui. Some very helpful local ladies were
happy to direct us to a cheaper motel in town even though they had
rooms to let themselves. They also advised us to eat in the
alternative 'fish and chips' shop. According to them much better and
significantly cheaper then the 'world famous' alternative. It turned
out to be a winner. Wonderful choice of fish and even battered
mussels, squid or scallops on the menue. All in all a good day.
I like the recycled microwave postbox! |
